NFL Head Coaching Tracker 3.0

Welcome back to one of the biggest traditions on this site: the NFL Head Coaching Tracker!

This is the third edition of the tracker. The idea of this page is simple: it’s a project to provide daily updates of NFL teams as they look to fill their head coaching vacancies. There are currently five (5) head coach vacancies in the NFL (as of Monday, January 4). Last offseason saw five (5) head coaching changes, a rather low number for the NFL. For reference, the previous offseason saw eight (8) head coaching changes, and most offseasons see between 6 and 7.

One added layer this offseason will be teams looking to hire a new head executive simultaneously. Of the five teams that have fired their head coaches thus far, four have fired their GMs (Bill O’Brien was acting as GM for Houston), with the Jets being the exception (Joe Douglas remains at GM). This is a good sign for organizations looking to have the coaching and front office in sync.

Below you can find information on each opening, as well as a section on which candidates are being looked at the most, and my picks for each opening.

If you’re curious on which names should be getting interviews this offseason, read my piece on the candidates I expect to see this hiring cycle.

Lets go!

Note: I list someone as a candidate when another reporter does so officially, or an interview has been requested, scheduled, or taken place. Otherwise, any mentioning of a name (done so by at least one verified reporter) will mean that person is just linked to the job.

Update (January 3): check the “My Picks” section for my predictions for each opening

Update (January 29): all positions have been filled, see the updates for each as they happened below (and an archive of my original picks)

My Picks

Predictions made Sunday evening, January 3 (I will not go back and change these, only add if more jobs open up). Warning: I am 0-for-13 the past two offseasons, but that’s not stopping me! This season I’ll make my main pick, and two (2) alternatives for each pick

Update (January 14): when a hire is made I’ll delete the reasoning and say if I was right or wrong on the hire

Jacksonville Jaguars: Brian Daboll (Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator)

If not Daboll, then… Eric Bieniemy or Urban Meyer

  • Urban Meyer was hired, so my first guess was… wrong (but my alternative guess was correct)

New York Jets: Brandon Staley (Los Angeles Rams Defensive Coordinator)

If not Staley, then… Eric Bieniemy or Robert Saleh

  • Robert Saleh was hired, so my first guess was… wrong! (alternative guess of Saleh was correct)

Atlanta Falcons: Matt Campbell (Iowa State Head Coach)

If not Campbell, then… Raheem Morris or Brian Daboll

  • Arthur Smith was hired, so my first guess was… wrong! (alternate guesses wrong too)

Los Angeles Chargers: Arthur Smith (Tennessee Titans Offensive Coordinator)

If not Smith, then…. Brian Daboll or Eric Bieniemy

  • Brandon Staley was hired, so my first guess was… wrong (alternate guesses wrong too)!

Detroit Lions: Marvin Lewis (former Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach)

If not Lewis, then… Robert Saleh or Leslie Frazier.

  • Dan Campbell was hired, so my first guess was… wrong! (alternate guesses wrong too)

Philadelphia Eagles: Mike Kafka (Kansas City Chiefs Quarterbacks Coach)

If not Kafka, then… Eric Bieniemy or Joe Brady

  • Nick Sirianni was hired, so my first guess was… wrong! (alternate guesses incorrect too)

Houston Texans: Eric Bieniemy (Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator)

If not Bieniemy, then… Matt Eberflus or Arthur Smith
